Bringing Dignity and Hope to the Disabled in Jordan
Like many places around the world, the poor in Jordan lack the basic resources for those who are disabled or physically challenged. For some people this is due to poverty, while others face the rejection of their families and villages. There is often a great stigma placed upon disabled people in Jordan as the families often see them as a shame to the honor of the family.
In a recent visit to a village in the north of Jordan, GHNI spoke with one of the local community leaders working in social development. We asked what some of the greatest needs were for the villagers. Anticipating something along the line of income or education, we were greatly surprised by his response. He shared that the disabled and handicapped in the village suffer a great deal and don’t have basic resources. Most of them (over 15 persons in a village) just lay in their beds without even having a simple wheelchair. They are confined to the same room, the same bleak walls, most of their lives. That is the fate of so many in the poor areas of Jordan, especially the villages.
GHNI is working with several partners, including Joni and Friends, and is planning to ship a container of 100 wheelchairs to the poorest of the poor in Jordan. We have a grant of $1,750 and if we raise an equal amount, we can ship the wheelchairs just in time for summer. Those laying in the darkness of disgrace will have the opportunity to feel the sun on their face, and the freedom of mobility.
That means only $17.50 gives a wheel chair to a hurting person. Help us bring dignity and meaning to a life enclosed by poverty. Help us spread hope and help to the hidden and hurting! Visit our donate page to make your gift today.
