Although Egypt is a country with a rich history and amazing structures that have stood for millennia, a large portion of the population lives in shabby, rickety dwellings that may not last another year, let alone another decade.
For centuries, 90% of Egyptians have lived within 10 miles of the Nile River, and today the situation is no different. Many young families move to the cities to pursue financial security, but often find only unbearable situations and broken dreams.
It is with this growing urban poor that GHNI is launching Transformational Community Development (TCD) efforts in 2010. We’ll focus on helping the two most vulnerable segments of the population – women and children.
Initially, local GHNI staff will be involved in assessing needs, researching possible solutions and selecting communities in which to work. We’ll start by focusing on education for children, income generation and economic opportunities for women, and building strong families through our wellness training.
