In May of 2008, cyclone Nargis claimed 130,000 lives. It was the worst natural disaster in Myanmar’s history. With few people able to reach the worst-hit Irrawaddy Delta villages, GHNI was in a unique position to help the most vulnerable and helpless.
Medical Team: GHNI partnered with International Medical Relief to bring a medical team from Brazil, Korea, and the US for two weeks. The team provided primary medical care for hundreds of people suffering from both the cyclone and extreme poverty. For many villagers, this was the first time they had ever been treated by a doctor. Their faces lit up with joy!
Orphans: Hundreds of children are grieving the loss of their parents from cyclone Nargis. These children are alone and defenseless against exploitation and international child slave predators. Our GHNI team continues to find children and bring them to “The Father’s House,” a GHNI home for orphaned children, where they will receive long-term care. Volunteer teams have helped by building furniture and purchasing clothing and other needed items for the children at “The Father’s House.”
No-Go for Non-Nationals: Access by foreigners to most of the hardest-hit villages of the Irawaddy Delta is still refused. But our team of indigenous national workers continues to put themselves at risk by helping the desperately suffering.
People are perpetually hungry and are not getting enough food to remain healthy, and mosquitoes pose a very difficult problem. So our Burmese GHNI team continues to conduct distributions of food, mosquito nets, fishing nets, water pumps, and other vital tools and supplies.
Thank you to all of you in our Global Village who continue to help the Irawaddy Delta villages! This will be a long-term effort to not only help in their recovery, but to eventually establish our powerful Transformational Community Development (TCD) training within these poor villages. Please continue to stand with us.
