Indonesia: Tanah Keke

When GHNI’s local partners first visited the island of Tanah Keke, the people greeted them by saying, “Welcome to the forgotten island.” For generations, this has been the general feeling on this remote village – forgotten, poor and left to fend for themselves.

The people on the island of Tanah Keke are fishermen, many living “hand-to-mouth” from the fish they catch and sell. In years past, some families were able to purchase fish ponds and were able to survive from the cultivation of fish and shrimp, but due to severe weather the past few years; most of these fish ponds are now destroyed.

Now years later, after that first visit by the GHNI team, the village of Tanah Keke is excited to be learning about Transformational Community Development  and how their community can help themselves transform. Leaders of Tanah Keke have begun to work together, with the guidance of the GHNI team, planning to form a fishing co-op, a literacy group for women, and a weekly TCD program, teaching lessons from preventative health education to moral values.

Through GHNI and your monthly partnership, the village of Tanah Keke is excited to one day have electricity for every home, good education for their children, and economic stability for every family.
