Sri Lanka is an island nation known for the natural beauty of its tropical forests, waterfalls and exotic elephants and monkeys. But the country’s beauty is accompanied by the pain of tremendous suffering. A devastating tsunami in 2004 killed over 40,000 people, and in 2009 Sri Lanka ended a 30-year civil war that tore the nation apart and further cast it into extreme poverty.
GHNI has been working with the poor in Sri Lanka since the tsunami. Today, our projects are centered in the villages of Yakkalamulla, Lelwella and Bandarawella.
Most people in the villages try to provide for their families by scavenging for tea leaves, tapping rubber trees or farming vegetables. At best they only make about $1.50 per day—not nearly enough to meet the daily needs of their families. They eat only one meal per day of rice and bread, and a small portion of meat once a week. Unsuprisingly, there is widespread under-nourishment.
GHNI is bringing hope to these three villages. Our chicken and eggs businesses are helping families produce income, and so is our successful pig farm training program.
You can help Sri Lanka’s villages and come on a Compassion Trip to see the impact of your donations.
