Jordan: Ma’in

In the central Jordan region of Moab, near the village of Ma’in, there are exotic waterfalls and mineral hot springs that have been a “spa” destination going back to the days of King Herod and beyond. Today, luxury spas are springing up, catering to wealthy travelers seeking the health benefits of the warm waters.
But the residents in near-by Ma’in do not get to experience or benefit from these luxuries. Many people suffer the effects of unclean water due to lack of adequate filtration. There are no libraries, parks, cinemas or restaurants in the village, and there is only one part-time medical facility for more than 7000 residents. Costs for medical care make it inaccessible for the poor.
The people of Ma’in, together with GHNI, are launching plans to create a new community center that will be a facilitate Transformational Community Development (TCD). Their vision for the center includes education, literacy, health, fitness and hospitality. The center will provide a classroom for continuing education where topics such as sewing, English, and water-filtration will be taught. There will be a library and outside reading area, a medical clinic for visiting physicians to provide health care for the poor, and guest rooms and facilities for visiting teachers, doctors, or volunteer teams. The center will also have Ma’in’s very first recreational complex for local children to learn and play a variety of sports.
Though the center is not yet completed, GHNI is already helping the village learn water-filtration methods, as a majority of the people suffer from water-borne illnesses.
GHNI is excited to partner with the people of Ma’in as they begin their journey of long-term transformation. Would you consider joining hands with Ma’in by investing in their new community center?
