This region of Turkey is surrounded by some of the most strikingly beautiful scenery and is inhabited by wonderful, free-thinking people.
But they are also a leery and suspicious people, as this region of is one of the most neglected and underdeveloped in all of Turkey. The region has also experienced “collective punishment” because of alleged separatist activity.
The government provides some basic infrastructure, so GHNI is focused on giving these villages health and wellness training and educational help from the five areas in our Transformational Community Development (TCD) model.
Medical care is sparse and inadequate. One of our star volunteer staff is an ER doc (Dr. K) whose family comes from this region. After traveling to the region for many years and bringing his fellow doctors from as far as 24 hours away, Dr K is hoping to take a six month leave of absence and move to O-town. While stationed there, he will be providing free medical care to the hidden and hurting of the region, as well as working on a variety of TCD projects.
