Lessons on Friendship and Fire
September 30, 2022

“My friend is one of the best friends in my heart,” Peter said. “In the development class, I chose the best friend, and I learnt who is a loyal friend and who is not.” Youssef said, “I have many friends through school, on the street, and in the community, and our relationship with each other is not the best thing.”
“My colleagues and I would argue, and we used to part ways a lot, and reconcile after a while. However, I have a friend who is very loyal, and I cannot be angry with him. Who is the best friend for me and how do I choose him? A good friend is loyal, faithful, and honest in his words. I also learnt that there is a difference between fellowship and friendship, and a true friend accepts me with all my flaws. Really, my friend is the best friend.”
We continued to provide a Transformational Community Development (TCD) programme for women. After the terrible church fire last month in Cairo, we gave a lesson about the causes of the fire. Mrs. Nesma said, “Before I took a lesson about fire, its causes, and what to do when a fire occurs, I used to put more than one plug in the electric joint, such as the plugs for the washing machine, kettle, and iron. These are heavy loads on a weak cable, and on one occasion I heard a popping sound and saw bulges emerging from the joint with the smell of a burning wire. I shut off the public electricity from the metre, and if I had not disconnected the electricity, a fire could have occurred. After I heard the lesson about the causes of the fire, I learnt that the excessive loads of electricity and the quality of the electrical cables caused the fire. The lessons gave me special enlightenment and understanding, and this made my home safer.”
