Water Scarcity Leads to Innovative Practices
April 3, 2024
In Tuti Village, food insecurity has been exacerbated by water scarcity, leading to diminished agricultural productivity. To address this challenge, we recognized the necessity of implementing a Water conservation mechanism. Fortunately, the conservation farming training we received through the Transformational Community Development (TCD) program has equipped us with the knowledge to apply effective practices.
This innovative approach to farming involves three key components. The first is zero tillage, which minimizes soil disturbance during planting so we can maintain soil structure and reduce erosion. Second, we utilize crop rotation, alternating crops on the same land, which helps maintain soil fertility and prevents nutrient depletion. Our third approach is blanketing, which means covering the planting area with plant residuals to act as a protective layer, reducing evaporation and conserving moisture.
Implementing these techniques has been crucial for our specific situation, and we extend our gratitude to GHNI and other partnerships for empowering our community with these valuable skills.
Thank you!
