From Being Teased to Praised

Kaushal's abundant farm of dragon fruit.

“I was insulted and mocked by people when I started to plant dragon fruit; they thought it was just cactus that was found in jungles,” said Kaushal*, a Transformational Community Development (TCD) active member of the village. Some people suggested it wouldn’t be good to plant thorny cacti surrounding the open spaces of the house.”

TCD really brought transformation to our community. We know how people react to their failures and successes. We have given priority to successful TCD community members so that other members of the community will be encouraged. With the teaching of TCD lessons, the mindset of the people has been changed. When the community members think impossible, TCD lessons bring changes of possibility. This is amazing for them. This is how people are very impressed with the TCD activities in the community.

It is really a happy time for Kaushal. The dragon plants began to produce fruit. TCD had helped him with seed money to plant dragon fruit, and he had started with 20 plants. Now he has more than 50 plants. This is a new and unique fruit in the village. Community members were surprised to see a cactus plant giving sweet fruits because they didn’t know what it was. It is a healthy and expensive fruit in comparison to other local fruits. He made a good profit and wants to expand the area for farming commercially.

I met five family members of the community who are facing financial problems, and I convinced them to stop worrying and start TCD work. They are being trained with the TCD lessons, and they will be supported by seed money for Income Generation by next month.

The TCD Water Committee has made the decision to clean the water source and the harvest tank weekly. They did their job well this month. Another important decision is that the community has appointed a Caretaker for community drinking water.

The TCD Education Committee has decided to offer teaching free of tuition to the community children. TCD committee member Lopika* is volunteering as a teacher to the primary school children.

Community children have no malnutrition. Our TCD team measured the children’s arms and no malnutrition was found in the children.

This month, community members are involved in the farming of paddy and vegetable gardening. As a TCD worker, I encouraged community members to do agriculture farming and produce food and to be sustainable with food. And I taught the community to eat organic food and avoid chemical drinks and junk food. Community members are inspired by TCD work, and I hope still more people’s lives will be transformed by five elements of TCD.

Thank you!
