Generating Reliable Income
August 27, 2024
Maisha Bora, located in Isiolo County, represents one of the largest slum communities in the region. It is inhabited by predominantly middle and low-income earners facing daily challenges to meet their basic needs. Despite these hardships, the community members exhibit a notable receptiveness to innovation and a readiness to embrace change. Transformational Community Development (TCD) initiatives have been implemented, aiming to empower residents and foster sustainable progress.
Focused on microentrepreneurship and practical skills training this month, TCD training at Maisha Bora has encouraged community members to explore entrepreneurial opportunities as a pathway to improve their economic situations.
One compelling example is Mama Husein, who seized an opportunity to establish a tea-selling business at the Isiolo livestock market. Supported initially by a microloan, Mama Husein expanded her enterprise into chicken rearing, starting with a modest flock of 50 chicks. Through diligence and proper management, she achieved significant growth, generating a reliable income from egg sales within a short span. Today, Mama Husein not only meets her family’s needs but also supplies eggs to local retailers, emerging as a respected figure and business leader within her community.
By nurturing microentrepreneurship and fostering self-reliance among residents, these efforts have created a ripple effect of empowerment. Mama Husein’s success story serves as a testament to the transformative power of TCD, illustrating how individuals equipped with the right support can attain economic independence and make meaningful contributions to their communities.
Thank you,
