Giving Farming Another Go

Kiwanjani villager, James, with his small spinach farm.

Kiwanjani is a small village based in Wabera Ward in Isiolo County. Our Transformational Community Development (TCD) volunteer based in Kiwanjani has been working with farmers to help them improve their knowledge and increase their crop yield. Many of the small-scale farmers from this village depend on rainfall to grow crops to provide for their families, often supplementing that with casual labor.

This month, we formed a new Food Committee in Kiwanjani and discussed the problems they faced as farmers in this region, such as when rain is scarce and harvests fail, farmers have to rely on water provided by the county government to irrigate their crops. They also mentioned vital needs like fertilizers and pesticides, which are often too expensive or unavailable. We gave them TCD training on our best farming techniques and irrigation methods.

James, a father of three, is a farmer in Kiwanjani. When the rains stopped and the crops failed, he was forced to rely on unpredictable, casual labor for his family’s basic needs. When the TCD lessons began, he joined in and decided to start farming again. His nurseries for spinach and kale are doing well. James is very happy and very grateful to our TCD trainers and hopes more farmers will attend the training.

Thank you!
