Standing Up to Food Insecurity
September 1, 2022
Burkina Faso is a land-locked country. Though it grows food, what is produced is inadequate, so they have to import food from other parts of Africa and Europe. The incessant and intensified terrorist attacks in the country and neighbouring countries, like Mali and Niger Republic, have restricted vehicular movement and, as a result, limited the quantity of food that enters the country. This has adversely impacted the food prices and the cost of living generally.
Mainasara, our Transformational Community Development (TCD) worker, has had one-on-one conversations with Koubah Bingo villagers about the need to have backyard gardens. This way, they have more food for their families. Salmata, a housewife, is one out of several women Mainasara and his wife, Fatima, have taught how to plant FAITH (Food Always in the Home) Gardens. She took up the challenge and planted tomatoes, okra, moringa, and citrus behind her house. Salmata works daily on her farm as the rain comes in. She is hopeful that her vegetables will do well and looks forward to having a bountiful harvest. She also hopes to have more vegetables than her family needs so she can sell them. Salmata appreciates how Mainasara and Fatima have challenged her to leverage TCD, to look inwards in dealing with food insufficiency, and inadequate income for the family.
Thank you!
