Villagers Rebuild with No Outside Help

December 19, 2023

A group of Myanmar villagers all working with bamboo.

The past couple months have been tough for the community as a result of the consequences of the Cyclone Mocha in the area. The community went through one of the darkest times of their lives because the cyclone wiped out and destroyed all their properties and belongings overnight. The villagers felt deeply depressed and hopeless about their future. They were in a situation where they struggled to survive.

After a few weeks, the community rallied as they remembered  the Transformational Community Development (TCD) lessons. The villager’s solid understanding of TCD led them to initiate their own rehabilitation using local resources without waiting for the outsiders to come and help them. First, each family took responsibility to rebuild their own house, and worked hard to put food on their tables. Secondly, the TCD leadership team mobilized the community members to rebuild their facility without waiting for humanitarian aid providers or organizations. In fact, the village did not get any assistance from NGOs for two months.

Against all odds, the community decided to rebuild the pre-school building and a temporary school building using local resources such as materials, money, and human resources. They made wood from big trees that fell down because of the storm and used them to rebuild the buildings. They did a fundraising event and raised adequate funds for the pre-school building. One of the leadership team members said, “We used wood and bamboo trees to rebuild the facilities. We served food to the volunteers and we enjoyed working together. Most importantly, we are so proud that we could help our children have access to their education again when we finished the facilities.” The community feels stronger and united and they continue to work together toward thriving.

Thank you,
