No Longer Forgotten
July 15, 2024

Maisha Bora is a Kiswahili word that means good life, but despite the village being called “Maisha Bora,” there is no visible good life in that area. The village is forgotten among all the villages in Isiolo County. In terms of development, they have lagged behind despite being a few kilometers away from Isiolo Town. The area lacks good sources of water, schools, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers for drug habits.
Recently, the country has faced harsh economic times, and the Transformational Community Development (TCD) volunteers saw the need to educate the community on money management. They introduced a group to the idea of a “Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA)”. A group of farmers joined the VSLA and have contributed to their financial freedom. Through the VSLA, the farmers are able to borrow three times the amount of their savings, which has enabled them to start up small businesses.
Mama Hussein is one of the beneficiaries of the loan and was able to start up a grocery business, which enables her to provide for her family and even pay school fees for her kids. She is very grateful to GHNI for the support they’ve shown.
Thank you,
