Kiwanjani Village is located in Wabera Ward, which is a wide area in Isiolo where a large number of people are living in extreme poverty. The majority of the people living in this region can’t afford two meals a day, and most of them are unemployed. The harsh economic times have made the situation worse, and the community is suffering from food insecurity due to the high cost of living.
To mitigate the worsening situation, GHNI volunteers in this region have started Transformational Community Development (TCD) training for the community to teach them how they can change their lifestyle by doing small-scale farming, utilizing the irrigation systems provided by the county government. The community has accepted the training and decided to work on farming. Although the decision sounded brilliant, implementing it remained a challenge because of the water shortage. With the available water, they have started farming beans and kale, among other subsistence crops, not only for consumption in their homes but also to sell the extra to other fellow villagers.
Florence, who is now a farmer, is thankful to GHNI for the training and support because she can now provide food for her children and sell some to earn a living.
Thank you!
