Local Champion Educates Youths

Three Myanmar villagers that are part of the Mro Youth Association.

The effects of the current civil war in the country have made people’s lives more difficult every day. Although the fighting in Rakhine state, especially in the area of Transformational Community Development (TCD) villages, has ceased for about two months, the bad impacts of the war have caused many economic hardships. Against the odds, the Mro Youth Association in the TCD village has made progress by equipping young people to become the leaders of the tribal groups.

The capacity building training was initiated by the youth leaders early June when the community’s known formal education opportunity was no more accessible for the village people as the area was occupied by the armed group and they could not establish governance and administration in the region, yet. The training center benefits more than 30 youth for the first batch. The participants are from various Mro communities in the area who have a big desire for the development of their community. The GHNI team has a consistent connection with the leaders and is working on how we can support the community-initiated training program which gives hope and opportunity for youth in the community.

Personal Impact Story

Hla Tun is the leader of the Mro Youth Association and has a big heart for his community. He started teaching students before the community was affected by the civil war. He loves educating his fellow Mro people. After the fighting in the area, formal education was no longer an option for the students and young people in the village. His team initiated a self-support community learning center where they are equipping more than 30 young people for the first batch. His desire is that the younger generation will be equipped for the upcoming changes and able to lead the community.

He said, ” We are looking forward to working together with the GHNI team as we believe GHNI can provide technical support that our organization needs. But now, due to the travel ban in our area and very limited communication channel, we are sad that we could not work closely, yet. But we have hope as GHNI is partnering with us. Through this training center, we believe the entire Mro communities will be educated on TCD strategy and able to lead community development in their respective villages.”
