There is a Way to Stay Healthy

Kibera Slum, the largest urban slum in Africa, is located in Nairobi, Kenya. This month, our Transformational Community Development (TCD) team worked in Kibera to educate the people living there on sanitation and hygiene. Kibera, like other slums, lacks basic infrastructure, including water, sanitation and hygiene, housing, and access to food and nutrition. Due to the poor sanitation and hygiene, most people suffer from either communicable or non-communicable diseases.

Recently, our team did home visits and found that most of the residents living in Kibera were suffering from diarrhea, dysentery, and typhoid. Together with the community health workers within Kibera, we were able to teach them about wellness and how to keep high levels of hygiene and sanitation.

Cosmas is a resident of the Kibera slum and one of the TCD committee members. He lives in a corrugated metal house with a rusted metal roof. He lives in this slum because he cannot afford life in middle- and upper-class neighborhoods. Cosmas joined us in the door-to-door visits and also suggested we do garbage collection around the homes in his village. We did as he requested, and he is grateful to GHNI for the TCD lessons.

Thank you!
