Light ‘Em Up!
Families in cyclone-prone Binodpur have found light, resilience, and hope despite frequent electricity outages.
Binodpur is a remote island village in India, located in the Sundarban, often known as the cyclone capital of the country. Life here is fragile. After every cyclone, electricity remains unavailable for nearly two to three weeks, leaving families in darkness and disrupting daily work, education, and safety.
To overcome this ongoing challenge, the Transformational Community Development (TCD) group in Binodpur took a courageous initiative. They dreamed of using portable solar systems so that light would no longer depend on unstable power lines. However, due to poor financial conditions, most families had been waiting for a long time, unable to afford the systems on their own. Hope arrived when GHNI stepped forward and partnered with the community, providing 50% of the required funds. This partnership turned a long-held dream into reality.
Last year, 28 families successfully purchased portable solar systems. Last month, another 10 families moved one step closer to a brighter future by purchasing their own systems. Today, homes are lit even during power cuts, children can study at night, and adults can continue their work safely after sunset. The portable solar systems have brought not only light but also dignity, resilience, and hope to the families of Binodpur. They sincerely thank GHNI for standing with this vulnerable community and helping transform darkness into light. Together, they are building a stronger and more resilient future for Binodpur.
Thank you,
