Because you choose to stand with people living in extreme poverty, lives are being transformed – not temporarily rescued, but permanently changed. The stories in this report come from the first half of 2026 and represent five distinct areas where your generosity is at work: Food, Water, Wellness, Education, and Income Generation. Together, these five elements form GHNI’s Transformational Community Development (TCD) model – a community-led, five-year journey to self-sufficiency that ends with GHNI walking away, because the community no longer needs us. That exit strategy is what makes your investment different. You are not funding dependency. You are funding freedom.

FOOD – Growing food security from the ground up

“Swampy Sustainability”

When a young woman in Bomborma Village learned about sustainable agriculture through GHNI’s Transformational Community Development training, something changed inside her. She didn’t wait for conditions to improve. She didn’t wait for outside help to arrive. She went to the TCD champion in her village and asked to partner with him.

He gave her five cups of maize seed – worth $4 – and encouraged her to request a plot of swampland from the local authority to cultivate. Once the land was granted, she hired laborers to help prepare the heaps for planting. Now, every morning and every evening, she and her children walk to that farm together – tending their crops, practicing the innovative agricultural techniques she is learning at the regular TCD meetings.

Because you give, a young woman with almost nothing is building a future out of land no one else wanted. That $4 in seed. That piece of swampy ground. That community of people willing to show her what’s possible. You made all of it available.

WATER – Clean water and sanitation for every household

“Continuing to Improve”

In February 2026, the community of Don Zoukoutoudja celebrated a milestone: their 50th Transformational Community Development meeting. It was a moment to reflect on how far they had come – and to be honest about the distance still to go.

The community gathered to recognize the volunteers and committees who have been quietly changing daily life: the sanitation committee, the handwashing campaign team, the group that built simple trash receptacles using local materials, and the members who led the effort to promote proper dish washing and food safety. Most significantly, Don Zoukoutoudja has seen dramatic improvements in community health and dignity since the construction of ventilated improved pit (VIP) toilets, which replaced open defecation practices that had persisted for generations.

Looking ahead, the community is already planning their next challenge: a solar-powered borehole that would bring clean water directly to households. You helped a community reach its 50th meeting – still going, still growing, still dreaming of what comes next.

WELLNESS – Healthier communities, stronger families

“Successful Sanitation”

Elwapathar Village, Jharkhand  ·  India  ·  South Asia

In Elwapathar Village in India’s Jharkhand state, most families were managing without any sanitation facilities at all. Residents came regularly to GHNI’s TCD lessons, learning about hygiene, disease prevention, and the direct connection between proper sanitation and long-term health. The knowledge was taking root. The challenge was turning it into action.

A community member named Joel decided he would be the one to go first. He organized his neighbors, motivated those who were hesitant, and led the effort to construct a household toilet. This month, the work was completed — the first fully functional toilet built through community initiative in Elwapathar. It is one toilet. But for a community where none existed, it represents something enormous: proof that when people are equipped with knowledge and a community that supports their leadership, long-standing challenges can be overcome.

Because you invest in wellness, Joel had something to work with – a framework, a community, and the confidence that comes from knowing change is possible. One step at a time toward a healthier and more dignified future.

EDUCATION – Opening minds and opening doors

“Transformation from Poverty to Productivity”

There was a time when Toya* and her family lived so far below the poverty line that they had no reliable food, no adequate clothing, no land, no income, and no standing in their community. She had no formal education and no training of any kind. “Extreme poverty” was not an abstract concept for Toya – it was the texture of every day.

Then she joined GHNI’s TCD awareness classes and education sessions. Through the program, she received seed money and used it to start raising pigs – then purchased a cow, earning income from milk sales. She learned about savings and income management. This season, she leased land and cultivated wheat – harvesting enough food for her entire family for a full year. For the first time in her life.

Today, Toya is self-sustaining. She is respected in her community. She is an example that others point to when they need to believe that things can change. None of it happened without the education program you made possible, or without the TCD team that walked alongside her through every step.

INCOME GENERATION – Building economic independence — for good

“Empowered Woman Now Has Economic Stability”

Dadpur Village  ·  Bangladesh  ·  South Asia

Munira* is a housewife in Dadpur Village in Bangladesh. Her husband works as a truck driver and is away from home most of the time. As the only earner in a family of four, his income left little margin for anything unexpected. For most of her life, Munira believed her role was limited to managing the household and caring for her children. She had never considered that she might also contribute financially to her family.

That changed when she participated in GHNI’s TCD education program. Through the training sessions, she gained new awareness of what was possible — and the confidence to try. With support from the TCD project committee, she received seed money and used it to purchase two goats. She raised them carefully, and now plans to sell them at a profit – then reinvest the earnings to purchase more, building a sustainable cycle of income one animal at a time. When there is work available on neighboring farmland, she takes it, earning additional income for her family.

Munira is no longer waiting for circumstances to change. She is changing them herself. Because you gave, a quiet, capable woman found the resources she needed to step into economic independence – permanently.

Every community GHNI works with has the same destination: the day it no longer needs us. That’s not failure — that’s the whole point. When a TCD village graduates, your investment has done its job completely. The wells keep running. The cooperatives keep meeting. The children keep going to school. And GHNI moves on to the next village that needs a hand up — not a handout.
