Mitigating Waste

The residents of Bomborma who actively participate in the palm oil trade, both through growing or processing, have had a major challenge in processing the palm fruits into palm oil. The local method involved mashing the nuts using a mortar and a pestle, which was very tasking, strenuous, backbreaking work that consumed a lot of time and caused a lot of delays.

During one of the Transformational Community Development (TCD) meetings, members of the Income Generation Committee suggested that they begin a group savings project to raise funds to solve this challenge. As a result, each household was encouraged to contribute the sum of five leones (20 cents) per household, per month. After some time, they were able to accumulate the sum of 10,000 Leones (about $480), which was enough to purchase a locally made palm oil processing machine, which saves time, reduces stress, and mitigates the wastage of the palm fruits.

A very vocal beneficiary of this new development is Chief Thomas and his family. Chief Thomas is a speaker of the town and owns a sizable palm fruit garden.
