Families are in need of food in Kenya & Ethiopia
The Borena zone of the Oromia region is susceptible to frequent drought. Recently, the recurrences of the drought have become intense and it is increasing. The region historically faced severe drought and the Households are yet to fully recover from the impact of the consecutive droughts which have also been worsened by war in the Oromia region and desert locust infestations. The current drought marked the third consecutive poor rainfall season because the short season of rain in September failed to materialize resulting in the loss of cattle and almost all the ponds, including ponds dug by global hope Ethiopia’s TCD project in areas where drought-resistant food crops are grown are dried.
According to the zone’s Disaster Risk Management Office, nearly 90,000 cattle deaths are reported affecting the livelihood of more than 1000,000 people. The chronic shortage of water and pasture forced villagers to move far from their usual migration route and the weak ones left behind are facing severe food insecurity and deteriorating housing conditions.
Our goal is to mitigate the worsening situation by providing food items to the weak who are left behind and by creating a way to generate sustainable income by providing water through drilling ponds that can be a source of water for their livelihood, for their cattle and to grow drought-resistant crops.
GHNI remains committed to the following 3 objectives:
To mitigate the consequence of the drought
To reduce the number of food-insecure households by providing Maize powder
To prevent illnesses that could be caused by food shortage
