Micro-Loans Foster Self-Sustainability
November 3, 2023
The loan program in the village has positively impacted the lives of the people as it helps them start small scale businesses that generate Income for the family. The total beneficiaries of the loan program is more than 150 out of a population of 300 in the village. The vulnerable families were given priority to get the loans and the most successful businesses were betel nut plants and woven mats.
Due to the current situation, a lot of villagers lost their jobs and struggled to feed their families. Most families have the physical strength to work, but there are no job opportunities for them and they feel discouraged. In the midst of their distress, the small loan program has given them hope as they can start a small family business. One of the beneficiaries said, ” The loan helps our family to start up a small woven mat business. We have good skills in weaving mats, but we did not have money for the start-up. Now, we can weave mats and sell them in the market. We make some money to buy food. Sometimes the mat price is low, and sometimes it is high. We can survive with the profit we make from this small business.”
“The betel nut plantations are doing well this quarter. The plants are healthy and growing well. In the market, there is a demand for betel nut, so we hope that we can make a profit when we sell it,” quoted our champion. The vulnerable families in the community found the loan program so helpful and they are excited about their business. Our plan for next quarter is to monitor and evaluate the program and continue to help the villagers in a way that they can independently provide for themselves with the resources available to them. We are planning to explore a new village in the area to start a Transformational Community Development (TCD) program.
Transformational Community Development (TCD) Update:
Income Generation
The loan program has been operating in the community benefiting more than 25 families with a total beneficiaries of 150. Although there are a few challenges because of the current economic crisis in the whole country, the beneficiaries found new motivation and hope through this small program. They are glad they can bring food to their tables from the profit they make through their small businesses.
Thank you!
