Africa | Education | Income | Kenya | Kibera Slum | Sustainable Development

Transformational Community Development (TCD) is GHNI’s coaching-based process for helping villages transform themselves and break the cycle of extreme poverty. Kibera is a slum located in the midst of Nairobi City. It is the largest slum in east Africa, with over 3,000,000 people from every corner of Kenya. The majority of residents live on less than $1 a day. It is with this understanding that we started a TCD training program among the Kibera community.
This month, we dove into trying to ensure the Kibera community is self-reliant in terms of Income Generation. We have experienced a lot of success stories of individuals who have directly benefited from our TCD training program. During our visit this month, we had a meeting with the Income Generation Committee and discussed the way forward for the business community in Kibera. Most of the members expressed their distress during these hard economic times. There is a group of 15 members that started a small business that didn’t do well, and they had to close it down. We began our TCD training on how they can save funds again and successfully run a business.
Martin, a 24-year-old university student who dropped out due to lack of school fees, is a member of the group and has benefited greatly. He took a loan from the group and started a fruit-selling business. He shared how helpful the training has been to him and how it has motivated him to start the business to raise his school fees. Now an ambitious entrepreneur, he wishes to scale up and own a big store in the future. He is on the lookout for similar training.
Thank you!
