Saving Money & Getting Healthy with Organic Fertilizer
October 17, 2023
In May 2023, a partner introduced and donated a specially formulated organic fertilizer to some of our Transformational Community Development (TCD) villages across four West African countries. Batemone and Djambegou Villages, in northern Togo, were among these beneficiaries. In Batemone, the villagers are poor and things are hard. Some of the most prominent problems facing this community is a lack of schools, hospitals, and good water.
Sayi, a TCD worker, was at Djambegou Village where he received reports from a few farmers about how beneficial the organic fertilizer is to their maize farms this planting season. They saved costs on chemical fertilizer that had become unaffordable for local farmers. The farmers said they found no difference between the organic fertilizer recently introduced and the chemical fertilizers they had been used to.
Sayi used the opportunity to further reiterate a major advantage of organic fertilizers over chemical fertilizers, which has a positive impact on health, whereas chemical fertilizers can be harmful to people’s health. Having tested the organic fertilizer, the next step is to engage the partner to share knowledge about production of the fertilizer using locally available resources. The partner has shown some interest in this project and the TCD communities in northern Togo are ready to participate and own it.
Thank you!
