Local Ownership is Key in Village Development

All it takes is one person setting an example of building their own water filter to save money to change a village’s perspective that they don’t have to wait for outside help.

Luke is a true champion in mobilizing community leaders by convincing them of the importance of the Transformational Community Development (TCD) program among Mro communities that inhabit the nearby Yangon area. Soon after his completion of the Training of TCD 1 course, Luke’s worldview towards development changed as he understood true freedom is when the people have ownership and the right to determine what they want to do in their community using local resources without waiting for outside resources.

Having a clearer understanding on helping people without hurting them, Luke continued to share his knowledge with his networks, encouraging them to change their perspectives and to work together to achieve greater things. He believed that the communities could go forward from survival to a more prosperous future if they understood the TCD strategy.

Literally, his transformation story is impressive. TCD training has grown his heart to serve people with a holistic approach. He usually encourages people that even trash can become gold if we learn the right technique to change it. He also set a good example in his community by building a Bio-sand water filtration system for his household use.

He said, “Nowadays, buying drinking water is costly. We spent a lot of money on it. This method is easy and cheap to install. Why not build it for ourselves. As soon as I can drink this water, I will encourage all the leaders of my network to build one for their own family and community.”

Now, the installation is complete and the system works way better than he expected. Luke and his wife are happy as they don’t need to pay money for drinking water. Instead, they can use the money to buy food for the family. The GHNI team will test the water after 30 days to make sure that the water is safe for the family. Luke is a true inspiration to his community and among his ethnic leaders.
