Illiterate Parents Grasp Importance of Education for Children

Lack of knowledge and education can create cycles of poverty unless illiterate parents see the importance of education for their children.

One of the village ladies said, “I am very happy, my son and daughter’s education has improved. Even though they reached class five, they could not read and write well, but now they can read and write well.” Tutoring classes started through Transformational Community Development (TCD) now have an average 20 children regularly attending. The education of children studying in government schools was not good. Many children did not even know how to write their names even after reaching 3rd/4th grade. Learning was in critical condition. Parents were also worried that their children’s studies were not good. Through the TCD program, it emphasized sending all the children to school, but the children were not learning as much as they should learn . When the TCD team investigated, they found out that even though the teacher taught well in the school, the children’s education was weak because there was no one to teach and help them to do their homework.

When we went for follow-up, we found out that the parents themselves are also illiterate. Some of them can’t even help their children to do homework. Therefore, we saw the necessity of starting TCD tutoring classes. We have been providing free tutoring classes for a few months by employing two volunteer teachers. Through this work, we ourselves, the community guardians and children have also been blessed. The people of this village have now come to understand that they had to live in poverty because they did not go to school at their age. Now their children should not have to live such a sad and troubled life. They now understand the importance of education and want to educate their children.

Sister Sabita is very happy seeing the improvement in her children’s education because of the tutoring class. She said, “ I am very happy my children’s education has improved. Even though they reached grade five, they could not read and write well, but now they can read and write well.” She happily added, “Now my children can read English and even wrote my name in English and showed it to me.”

This Tutoring class has also affected the neighboring village children. Some children from the neighboring village have also come to the classes and are learning well. The tutoring classes provided by TCD are very much appreciated by all the people in the community and considered as a very important work of TCD. All the children and parents have expressed that they will never forget the merits of  TCD’s good work and are sincerely thankful to the GHNI team for the TCD program. Thank you.

Transformational Community Development (TCD) Update

TCD© is GHNI’s coaching-based process for helping villages transform themselves and break the cycle of extreme poverty.

Water

The work of spreading public awareness about health and clean water usage for all is being done continuously. Water supply has reached everyone’s house. Everyone is drinking pure and clean drinking water. Health problems and diseases caused by drinking water are greatly reduced. The people of the community are self-employed in water supply works and work together in any maintenance and water supply project. During this quarter, we did a lot of maintenance work and did not let the community run out of drinking water.

Food

This quarter, the villagers are involved in food production. They have raised maize, paddy and lentils. They put into practice what they were taught in TCD to be self-sustainable. We taught them about eating a balanced diet with protein and vitamins from vegetables. Villagers were involved in kitchen gardening and had fresh vegetables for their daily use. This quarter there was no lack of food in the village. Each family ate at least two meals per day.

Income

TCD trained the villagers about Income Generation and multiplication of income sources. This third quarter, the villagers had economic opportunities supported by seed money and they started goat keeping, hen keeping, buffalo keeping, bee keeping, poultry farming, micro shops and their family income sources.

Education

The TCD team met parents and taught them to enroll all school age children in the school. Now all children are attending school and receiving an education. TCD is helping by following up with children who cannot go to school continuously due to various problems. Now the dropout rate has decreased. We have conducted tutoring classes, further helping to improve the education of children.

Wellness

This quarter, TCD taught the villagers about personal and community healthcare. Children were taught personal health lessons, and the proper ways of hand washing and teeth brushing. Pregnant women were sent to the hospital to get regular checkups for their pregnancy and overall health.

Thank you!
