It is so exciting and fulfilling to see a community realize the benefits of education for their children!
In Saraswatipur Tea Garden, nestled in the lush expanse of North Bengal, a dark reality loomed over the children of the community. With very low literacy rates and a high number of school dropouts, many children were sent to work rather than to school. The parents, struggling to make ends meet, saw little value in education compared to the immediate financial benefit of having their children work. As a result, these young lives were trapped in a cycle of poverty, with no chance of a brighter future.
Anuj, a dedicated Transformational Community Development (TCD) trainer, decided to change the narrative of Saraswatipur. He began by visiting the community, speaking with parents, and sharing stories of hope that an education could bring to their children’s lives. It wasn’t easy—he faced resistance from those who believed that survival took precedence over schooling. Some even opposed his efforts openly, questioning the need for change. Despite these challenges, Anuj remained steadfast, continuing to engage with the community, building trust, and addressing their fears. He conducted workshops, met with elders, and showcased examples of communities where education transformed lives.
After many months of hard work and persistence, Anuj’s efforts began to bear fruit. Slowly, parents started to believe in the possibilities that education could offer their children. With growing support, an Education Committee was formed, involving both the villagers and Anuj. Together, they took responsibility for ensuring that children attended school regularly. Hope began to bloom in the hearts of the villagers as they envisioned a brighter future for their young ones. With the support of the community and their commitment to education, Saraswatipur’s children could finally dream of a life beyond the tea gardens.
TCD© is GHNI’s coaching-based process for helping villages transform themselves and break the cycle of extreme poverty.
We encouraged the dropout students to re-enroll in school. As of now, five dropped-out students have been re-admitted to school.
Thank you,
