Youth Empowered to Restore Forest and Hope

Embodying the resilience of the human spirit, the village youth are taking an active part to restore their environment and Hope after Cyclone Mocha.

In the aftermath of Cyclone Mocha, the devastation in Rakhine State left communities grappling with the loss of countless trees that once shaded their villages and preserved their water sources. The barren landscape now feels unbearably hot with water drying up faster, compounding daily struggles. In response, the Mro Youth Development Association (MYDA) stepped forward with a vision to restore their environment and heal their land. Their commitment to reforestation has already led to the planting of over 250 trees, and they are determined to plant even more in the coming months. This effort is not just about trees—it is about hope, resilience, and a future where their forests thrive once again.

MYDA’s work goes beyond reforestation. Their youth development program, rooted in the Transformational Community Development (TCD) model, equips young men and women with the skills and passion to lead social development initiatives in Mro villages. Over 20 participants have been trained through this program, each returning to their communities to inspire change. Guided by experienced local leaders and supported by GHNI, these young people are driving a transformation for the Mro ethnic group. They have started with simple yet impactful projects, such as planting trees along village roads, and progressed to initiatives like community-wide forest preservation. Through their efforts, the youth are not just growing trees—they are growing a legacy of care for their people and their environment.

Even amidst the chaos of civil war, MYDA’s unwavering commitment stands as a beacon of Hope. The community’s remarkable achievements in reforestation and youth empowerment showcase the resilience of the human spirit. With every tree they plant, they are reclaiming what the cyclone destroyed and building a better tomorrow. Their story is a testament to the power of unity, the strength of youth, and the profound impact of nurturing both people and nature.
