Ownership of Their Situation Solved Their Problem
Learning to identify a problem and come up with the solution empowers a community.
Water is a precious resource, but unfortunately most people are struggling to have it. Sana, one of our self-help group members, shares her thoughts. She said, “In my childhood, I used to go with my mother to bring water for my family. I grew up and now I am old, but still our struggles are the same. Everyday in the early morning, I went out with other ladies to bring water for my family. This was one of the major problems in our life, going out for half a kilometer and coming back with large cans filled with water on our heads, which was a very tough job.
“When we started taking part in Transformational Community Development (TCD) training, we learned about ownership. There was already a village committee formed. One day, during a meeting, I asked why don’t we solve the problem of water in our village because it is hard to go out everyday and to bring water for ourselves and our family. The village committee started thinking on this and when we talked to the team, they agreed. We started working on it, and soon we made this happen in our village. Now I have water taps available at my doorstep and I don’t need to bring water from far for my family. We can drink water anytime.”
