The Nubians are a tribe living between southern Egypt and northern Sudan. The Transformational Community Development (TCD) program works closely with Nubian children and women, and there is also a TCD committee of locals whose goal is to develop their community.

Umm Ashraqat and her daughter are enjoying the TCD group. She participates frequently and shared, “I’m an introverted woman, and I don’t like interacting with people because many of them have hurt me. I no longer trust anyone. But since joining the group, Shery, the TCD coordinator, has helped me integrate with the women through participation, home visits, and sharing what I’ve learned with others.

“The lesson about accepting others had a very powerful impact because I understood the meaning of accepting others, even if they’re different from me. The lesson on solitude brought about a huge change in my beliefs, because I always used to say, ‘I only love myself and my children, and I don’t need anyone.’ However, when my daughter fell ill and went to the hospital, I found all the women, my friends in the TCD group, supporting me and standing by my side. Now, I give space to those around me to share with people and try to maintain a positive social attitude, which has made a difference in my mood with myself and those around me.”
