Ishan* had a vision for his community. Eight years later, that vision is becoming reality. Before the Transformational Community Development (TCD) program arrived in Polewali Village, things were a little different. Many people in the community possessed a fierce opposition to change, often to their detriment. When Ishan initially shared his idea for the community to build their own learning center toward the betterment of childrens’ education and for the facilitation of community activities, not only did no one contribute or support his idea, but he was actively opposed.

When the TCD program began, Ishan saw it as a breath of fresh air for the community, and TCD meetings as an avenue to discuss ideas that would improve their life situation. It is difficult to understand the psychology behind what makes a community resistant to change, but there is something about TCD lessons and principles that break down that mindset, allowing people to embrace hope. Ishan did not forget his vision, and seeing his neighbors adopting TCD perspectives, he felt that it was time to bring up his idea once again. This time, things were different. Speaking with the GHNI trainer, Ishan said, “I am so thankful that this plan has received community support. Some have donated money, wood, metal roofing, and even the land for the learning center was provided without cost. The whole community is involved!”

Potential for change in the Polewali village has been there all along. The community has always had the skills, intellect, and resources to lift themselves out of poverty. It is a privilege to watch things develop as people like Ishan employ a new, infectious way of thinking which when converted into action, results in a better future for Polewali families.
