Giving a Hand Up, Not a Hand Out

Villagers collected items and money to help this poor woman become self-sustainable.

Katuwaghat villager, Chandrika, sitting on the floor pensively. - Giving a Hand Up, Not a Hand Out

This is a sad single woman. This woman was always present in Transformational Community Development (TCD) class. When I go to her village, she cries as soon as she sees me. I would hardly see her smile. Even at this age, she earns her food by working hard. Sometimes she would have no food at all. She starves and takes food from others to feed herself. There are six members in her family and her grandchildren are also in poor condition because the work of her sons and daughter-in-laws is not enough to provide for the family. TCD community members collected some items and money to provide some seed money to open an Income Generation project for her. She is very happy and we hope that there will be success in her Income Generation project. I would like to thank from my heart the GHNI partners and donors for supporting the TCD program.

“I am Chandrika, a member of TCD, and I am very happy with the work of GHNI. Through their work I have experienced a change in my life. When TCD started in my village, my family was very poor financially and my children did not go to school because I didn’t understand the importance of education. I didn’t have any knowledge except to live only to fill my stomach with enough food. When I started to follow the lessons taught by TCD leaders, I took seed money in the first round. Using that seed money properly, I bought a cow. From its income, I bought land on lease with the money I got from selling milk. I also bought land to build my own small house from the income of rice and wheat from farming. I am able to send my children to school with my farm income.”
