In Tandu Village, in the Tea Garden Cluster, many families were facing serious challenges in their daily lives. Poor sanitation and hygiene practices were common, which led to frequent health issues and discomfort. Open defecation not only increased the risk of disease but also affected the dignity and safety of family members, especially women and the elderly. Along with this, families were also dealing with social tensions and limited understanding of healthy living practices. These problems slowed down the overall development of the community.

Through the Transformational Community Development (TCD) program, community members began regularly gathering to learn, discuss, and reflect on issues affecting their lives. TCD played a key role in raising awareness about the importance of cleanliness, sanitation, and healthy habits. The training team supported the process as facilitators, encouraging villagers to think, take ownership, and act for their own development.

Mangru, an elderly member of the community, was one of those who actively participated in TCD meetings. Through these sessions, he understood the importance of having a toilet at home for the health, safety, and dignity of his family. Motivated by this learning, he decided to take action. Despite financial difficulties, Mangru, along with his family, took responsibility and worked step by step to build a toilet for their household. His determination and commitment reflected the true spirit of TCD—where change begins from within oneself.

Today, Mangru and his family are experiencing a significant improvement in their quality of life. They are living in a cleaner and safer environment, with better health and increased dignity. Their initiative has also influenced others in the village. Seeing this positive change, several other families have been encouraged to improve their sanitation practices and work toward building their own toilets.

This growing awareness and action clearly shows the impact of TCD in Tandu. The community is gradually moving toward self-reliance, improved hygiene, and a healthier lifestyle. Mangru’s story stands as a powerful example of how knowledge, combined with personal effort and community support, can bring lasting transformation.
