Look at That Garden Grow!
How an empty lot can improve a family's food security and nutrition.
In Binodpur Village, Namita, an active member of the Transformational Community Development (TCD) committee, turned a small unused space beside her home into a productive kitchen garden. Her initiative has become an inspiring example of how simple efforts can improve a household’s food security.
Like many rural families, Namita faced rising vegetable prices and irregular access to fresh, chemical-free produce. Buying vegetables daily was costly, and the empty land near her house remained unused due to lack of proper guidance and confidence. Determined to find a solution, Namita began her kitchen garden using compost made from household waste and selected seasonal leafy vegetables. With regular watering and natural pest control methods, her garden soon started producing fresh and healthy greens for her family.
Today, Namita’s kitchen garden has reduced household expenses, improved family nutrition, and inspired neighbors in Binodpur to start their own gardens. Her story shows that with dedication and the right approach, even a small backyard can create big change.
Thank you,
