The refugees from Sudan have had to overcome immense trauma, but through the love and care of those around them, they are succeeding!
Christina participated in the women’s class and said, “We fled to Egypt, escaping the war in Sudan. In Sudan, we lived in a beautiful, big house and had a decent life in Khartoum. We fled to some of our friends in Ezbet El-Haggana in Cairo. At first, adapting was tough and difficult. Life is completely different, noisy, high buildings without elevators, and a different culture. We faced bullying from some Egyptians because of our black skin color. Many families live together in one apartment without any necessities of life—no bed or fans, despite the intense heat in the summer. We were afraid and broken, and I wished to return to Sudan again. But we got to know the GHNI team, who planted hope in us. They have helped us since our arrival and provided us with food, a new mattress, pillows, sheets, and a fan. They asked us to join the Transformational Community Development (TCD) class for children and women. My children and I learned a lot. The best lessons were from the trauma management course. I recovered from my psychological pain and great shock. With the follow-up from the GHNI team, I became full of hope. Thank you, GHNI!”
TCD© is GHNI’s coaching-based process for helping villages transform themselves and break the cycle of extreme poverty.
During this quarter, 150 food bags were distributed to 150 poor Sudanese families.
10 women were trained in sewing and quilt making, and some of them started a sewing project.
The community distributed 103 school bags with school supplies to the children of TCD classes, which caused great joy for the children.
186 eyeglasses were given to children and women to help children study and succeed in their studies.
Thank you,
