In the crowded streets of Cairo, amid the daily challenges faced by thousands of refugee families, lived a young Sudanese girl named Rauth. Her family came seeking safety, yet, like many children, she was unaware of the hidden dangers around her. With the start of the rainy season, some streets turn into pools of water, and light poles and exposed electrical wires become a real threat. Not long ago, heartbreaking incidents shook the community when three children and several dogs lost their lives due to electrocution after touching wet light poles. The danger was very close to Rauth without her realizing it.

Rauth attended a Transformational Community Development (TCD) awareness session on electrical safety during rainy weather. She learned how light poles and exposed cables can become deadly and discovered simple steps that could protect her life and the lives of others. Just days later, heavy rain fell on Cairo. While children played near flooded streets, Rauth remembered the lesson. She stopped and immediately stayed away from light poles and electrical wires, knowing that a moment of awareness could save her life.

Rauth didn’t keep this knowledge to herself. She began sharing what she learned with her siblings, relatives, and friends, warning them to stay away from electrical poles and wires during the rain. Knowledge turned into protection, and a young girl became a source of safety for her community.

With a grateful smile, Rauth said, “I now live safely thanks to this lesson.”
