Rebuilding, Brick By Brick

Yelivo Village is taking ownership of their community school and working together to rebuild what the rains washed away.

For the first time, the Yelivo community focused its attention on the public primary school, which has been in a dismal condition for a long time due to government neglect. The chair of the Education Committee and our Transformational Community Development (TCD) worker visited the school to assess the state of disrepair and brainstorm with the school authorities on finding solutions. The Education Committee has started mobilizing the community to support the school rather than leave it all up to the government. The community has committed to reconstructing parts of the mud brick classrooms that were felled by heavy rain. This heartwarming narrative is a result of a community mindset change driven by TCD.

Water

The Committee taught the community about protecting the water wells and tasked them to cover the open, unprotected well. The committee is currently brainstorming with the community about how to dig more water wells in order to provide water for an area of Yelivo Village that suffers intensely from a lack of water.

Food

The community planted a communal farm of cassava, a project targeted to increase food sufficiency. The plan is to distribute the cassava to all the families that provided labor for the farm after harvest.
