By diversifying his crops, one farmer plants toward his goal of food security and income sources.
Many farmers in Baromasia Village faced challenges in agriculture due to a lack of proper farming knowledge and techniques. They were heavily dependent on the market for essential food items like mustard, onions, garlic, and potatoes, which increased their expenses and limited their self-sufficiency.
To address this issue, the Transformational Community Development (TCD) program was introduced as an ongoing initiative in the village. The program focuses on equipping villagers with agricultural knowledge, modern farming techniques, crop diversification strategies, and sustainable practices. Dronath, a member of the Baromasia TCD Committee, actively participated in this training, along with other villagers. The sessions motivated many to start cultivating a variety of crops, aiming for both food security and economic growth.
One inspiring example is Dronath, a 45-year-old farmer with three children and a wife. After engaging in the TCD program, he began cultivating diverse crops such as brinjal (eggplant), onions, potato, tomatoes, and mustard. During a visit to his farm, I asked him how long these crops would sustain his family. He confidently replied that for the next year, his family would rely on their homegrown mustard, onions, garlic, and potatoes, eliminating the need to purchase these items from the market.
Dronath’s dedication doesn’t stop there. After harvesting this season’s crops, he plans to plant a new variety of vegetables, ensuring a continuous food supply and financial stability for his family. His story is a powerful testament to how the TCD program, supported by the Baromasia TCD committee, is transforming lives and empowering farmers to achieve self-reliance and sustainable growth.
