Multiple Points of Impact
Step-by-step, Old Mosongo is walking a productive path towards self-sustainability.
In Old Mosongo, significant progress has been made over the course of the last quarter as we continue to apply Transformational Community Development (TCD). Over the course of the quarter, the TCD Food Committee has been able to encourage the cultivation of small gardens, which have produced cucumbers, peppers, bitter ball (bitter apple/bitter tomato), groundnuts, and garden eggs (a type of eggplant). These small-scale gardens were improved by the use of strictly organic fertilizers such as chicken droppings to help boost crop yield.
The reduction in illnesses due to uncleanliness is quite noticeable as members of the community have begun to understand personal and environmental hygiene and now have a functioning latrine in order to properly curtail public defecation and an unsanitary environment. Unfortunately, Old Mosongo is yet to have a clean and hygienic water source. The best the Water Committee has been able to do at the moment is to teach members of the community to boil water before drinking in order to reduce the likelihood of waterborne diseases.
The Income Generation Committee has been hard at work this quarter, as can be seen from the progress of the beneficiaries of the goat loan. The animals have begun reproducing, although during this month it was reported that one of the young kids wandered off and was lost while grazing. Regardless, results and a possible source of income have opened up thanks to TCD.
Thank you!
