This month, the GHNI training team visited several families in Mawa who have been taking part in the Transformational Community Development (TCD) initiatives to revitalize their pig farming operations. Among those visited was Agustina, who when asked about how her family was doing, burst into tears. Her tears were because of the emotions brought on by a couple of very difficult years financially after losing all of their pigs to the swine flu.

However, her tears were also the result of the renewed hope she is feeling now that the village TCD committee has begun implementing a plan where they purchased some pigs to breed and rebuild their pig population for economic benefit of the community.

Agustina and her family are among the first ones to be entrusted with caring for those pigs in the early stages. Her husband, like many others, has been away from home for months at a time, looking for opportunities to earn income any way that he can. Agustina was very surprised and touched when she was approached by the TCD committee to take part in this initiative. The pigs are expected to give birth in four months, and this has brought a breath of fresh air and hope for change in the village that has been absent in recent years. Agustina and her neighbors will continue to work hard to restore Income Generation activities in Mawa, bringing families back together.
