As the Mawa Transformational Community Development (TCD) program comes to a close this year, one of the village committee members, Nathan*, shared with the GHNI team about his vision for the community moving forward. Nathan has been pondering how to make the changes in the community sustainable without the continued guidance of the GHNI team.

Raising pigs has always been a major avenue for Income Generation in the Mawa village. Throughout several years of TCD engagement, they have learned perseverance in the face of challenges including a virus that wiped out virtually all of their pigs, and thus, their primary income source. The village TCD committee has been trying to find ways to rebuild operations in a way that benefits the entire community.

Nathan now has a plan which, if successful, will result in each of the 47 participating Mawa families to be able to own one adult female pig capable of bearing piglets. Land ownership is also a problem for the Mawa community, so according to Nathan, his plan will include the ability for them to purchase land together in the next 4-5 years. As he continues to finalize calculations, Nathan plans to present his vision to the community during their monthly TCD meeting this month. It is going to be important for Mawa to have thoughtful and strategic leaders in the coming years, so hopefully this is a start toward that end.
