In Bomborma, Sierra Leone, GHNI is partnering with local families through Transformational Community Development to secure clean water, expand vaccinations, and create sustainable income through shared processing and improved farming.

In Bomborma, a remote tribal village of 350 people in Sierra Leone’s Kenema District, GHNI partnered with local families to break the cycle of poverty by targeting the five core elements of TCD: Food, Water, Income Generation, Education, and Wellness. Historically, the community faced immense hardships, relying on unsafe stream water, lacking a health clinic, and depending on strenuous woodcutting and charcoal sales for meager earnings. Today, the village is actively transforming. In addition to organizing local TCD committees to clean and protect their open water source while preparing for a new borehole, the community collaborated with a regional clinic to bring critical polio and malaria vaccinations directly to their most vulnerable residents. Local families have also turned the tide on their economic challenges: by establishing a group savings program, they successfully raised enough funds to purchase a shared palm oil processing machine to eliminate backbreaking labor and reduce agricultural waste. Concurrently, innovative farming techniques are taking root, with single mothers and local farmers successfully cultivating previously unused swampland and using crop rotation to dramatically increase yields.
