These Harvests Are Nuts!

Birini community members are looking to change the “every man for themselves” mindset.

TCD worker, Nico, talking with four women from the Income Generation Committee. - These Harvests Are Nuts!

The Sokode region of Togo is known for their shea trees. In these forested areas, locals pick shea nuts to produce shea butter for both personal use and for sale to generate income. At harvest time, individuals and families race to pick nuts in a manner that can best be described as “the survival of the fittest.”

Recently, the Transformational Community Development (TCD) Income Generation Committee worked together to pick shea nuts, which is one of the three TCD proposals on the table for increased Income Generation for the locals. They harvested 411 kg of nuts, which they were able to sell for a profit.

For the time being, the committee has chosen to save the money as they continue to discuss their next steps for business and investments. Way to go for TCD in Birini, and kudos to our TCD worker, Nico, and the Income Generation Committee as they blaze the trail to financial independence for the locals!

Thank you!
