The Books Are Here!

The students in Kouvome were particularly delighted when their school books arrived on time for the new term.

Essodina, our Transformational Community Development (TCD) worker, and the Education Committee, changed the narrative for Kouvome orphans and several children in need this school year. Their statuses changed from “helpless and sad” to “super happy and excited” because they received their textbooks and writing materials within the first week of the new term and not a month or two later, as it usually happens.

The Education Committee and Essodina worked hard during the summer holidays to impart to the community the value of education. They led a campaign to encourage children to stop dropping out of school due to poverty, and raised funds from within the community to support those children in school. Their next step is to buy uniforms and shoes for the impoverished. TCD has helped these children remain in school. That’s no mean feat!

Transformational Community Development (TCD) Update

TCD© is GHNI’s coaching-based process for helping villages transform themselves and break the cycle of extreme poverty.

Food

Kouvome communally planted a soybean farm as a pilot project aimed at increasing food production in the community. Plans for the new quarter include wrapping up weeding, beginning to raise the funds needed for the harvesting process, and finally, harvesting the soybeans.

Education

The Education Committee held an awareness meeting to impart to the community the value of education in a bid to achieve mindset changes towards educating children. The committee and our TCD worker did fundraising and provided school text books and other educational materials for indigent children, particularly orphans. Our next steps are to raise funds to buy uniforms and shoes for school kids who don’t have them and engage the school teachers on how to improve the standard of education.

Wellness

Our TCD worker taught several lessons on wellness. The children were taught about the need for handwashing, and community members were then taught the dangers of a dirty environment. Body and environmental hygiene was also taught in order to prevent diseases, particularly malaria and parasites.
