Significant Flooding in Chiang Mai, Thailand: How Can We Help?
In late September and early October, heavy rainfall caused flash floods in several areas of Chiang Mai. The Ping River, which runs through the city, rose rapidly and overflowed onto roads, impacting adjacent areas, including canals.
After the situation improved, the GHNI Thailand team tried to reach the Rod Fai Village community, where we had previously conducted a survey for Transformational Community Development (TCD). Unfortunately, the village was still flooded, making it inaccessible. Many villagers lacked beds, while some were bedridden and unable to leave their homes. There was also a shortage of athlete’s foot medicine, and several houses were severely flooded and uninhabitable.
The local government provided support with food, water and other things. Villagers often cooked meals to share with each other, delivering food to those who couldn’t go outside.
We contacted community leaders to understand their immediate needs so we could respond quickly and effectively. As a result, we donated small boats, waders for health volunteers, wound care supplies, and general medications, including treatment for athlete’s foot. Now that flood waters have receded, we have been helping to clean several areas of the city, including Rod Fai.
Thank you!
