Many months ago, no one could walk around the Kouvome community without covering their noses. Some parts of the community were entirely avoided because of the bad stench that greeted visitors. As a result of open defecation, the community was also rife with illnesses. The experience is now different because of the Transformational Community Development (TCD) lessons. The community latrine has put a complete stop to open defecation. Locals are using the facility and are excited about the change this has brought–no more foul smell!

This month, it was the youth’s turn to clean the latrine and make sure it was in a perfect state for use. They did this with so much enthusiasm! The use of the toilets has greatly improved the sanitary conditions in the community and drastically reduced the frequency of common illnesses like diarrhea and vomiting. The locals hope to build more latrines around the community in the coming months.
