In Shri Ambra, India, GHNI is partnering with Santal families through TCD to shift from aid dependency to self-reliance—boosting school attendance, nutrition, and community-led solutions other villages can replicate.

In the Santal tribal village of Shri Ambra, India, acute poverty, low literacy, and a reliance on government aid historically left families struggling, with only five of the village’s seventy-seven young children attending school. To shift the community’s mindset from dependency to self-reliance, GHNI launched its Transformational Community Development (TCD) program to train villagers to use their own local resources effectively across the five key elements of TCD: Food, Water, Income Generation, Education and Wellness. Rather than working in isolation, the community has formed active TCD committees that now tackle shared challenges together, learning about available government subsidies to build homes and establishing household kitchen gardens to secure nutrition. By focusing on joint-participation projects, Shri Ambra’s families are successfully learning to drive their own development, creating a model of local self-sustainability that surrounding villages can easily replicate.
