In Yelivo, Togo, GHNI is partnering with local leaders through Transformational Community Development to improve sanitation, expand hygiene and nutrition, and build sustainable income—creating a model that can influence neighboring border communities.

In Yelivo, Togo—a community situated on a major road to the Benin Republic border—GHNI partnered with highly motivated residents and local leaders to address pervasive poverty, poor sanitation, and mosquito-infested gutters. The project targets the five core elements of TCD: Food, Water, Income Generation, Education, and Wellness, utilizing the community’s geographic position to create a model of development that can easily influence neighboring border clusters. Since launching, Yelivo has achieved significant, tangible milestones. Under the guidance of active TCD committees, the village constructed and opened its first-ever ventilated improved pit (VIP) latrines to combat sanitation-related illnesses. They have mobilized local volunteers to clear waste and debris from their main communal well and successfully organized a soap distribution and hygiene training initiative to restore health and dignity to local children. Furthermore, on the agricultural front, community members have collaborated to clear land for a shared ginger farm to secure sustainable Income Generation, while the Food Committee is currently establishing a new community garden to ensure year-round nutrition during the dry season.
