Fostering Collective Progress

Watching their neighbors successfully build toilets is leading other members of Didi Hara Village to take steps on their own.

The introduction of newly constructed toilets marks a transformative milestone for our community. While past government-led efforts sought to provide household sanitation facilities, they ultimately proved unsustainable due to various structural shortcomings. The roofs lacked durable metal sheets, the foundations were not reinforced with cement, and termites caused severe damage to the wooden components. Additionally, the toilet outlets were too shallow, and the design failed to incorporate a dedicated shower space, diminishing its practicality. Most critically, the initiative lacked genuine community engagement—it was executed merely to fulfill governmental planning objectives rather than to address the real needs of the residents.

In contrast, this time, the formation of a community committee and the weekly Transformational Community Development (TCD) sessions have been instrumental in identifying shortcomings and local priorities. Although I was not among the selected beneficiaries for toilet construction, witnessing the high-quality craftsmanship and the remarkable spirit of collaboration among community members deeply inspired me and my husband to build a toilet for our household. What is even more encouraging is that our decision has sparked interest among our neighbors—four additional households have now committed to constructing their own toilets. I am sincerely grateful to the TCD committee and our community elders for their visionary leadership in setting a powerful example of community-driven development. Their efforts are not only improving sanitation but also fostering a culture of collective progress and empowerment.

Thank you!
